Naked People Should Not Say "Dude"

She knows me so well, yet we've never met. The most hilarious results in a Portrait Swap so far, with Shelly from Naked People Should Not Say "Dude" (her drawing of me below). Go look at Shelly's blog right now!

One Year, Two Hundred Posts...

...and this is the comic Ive always wanted to make.
Check it out in the September issue of The Agenda, a Providence-based newspaper.
I cant believe I've been sitting in front of this glowing box for 365 days straight. On this occasion (and since it's my last post) Id like to show Im not completely selfish and give some thank-yous: First Id like to thank Liz, who has played a large roll in my post-college drawing career. She drags me out of the house and sticks markers in my hands. Also, she's taught me a quality piece need not take 20 hours to produce. And I'll swallow my pride and thank Illustration Friday, because Ive found some neat folk through it. But I wont thank God, because he didnt help at all.
And just kidding, it's not my last post.
Interesting discovery: My blog's one year anniversary falls on Friday the 13th. Excellent.

Dry Mouth

My third Portrait Swap. This one was between me and Steve. He is the one who brought you my idea for Illustration Friday Night.
Remember! When participating in a portrait swap via the internet there are a few things you should keep in mind when taking your reference photo.
- Use strong directional lighting. It helps me see the planes of your mug. Natural daylight through a window works best. Get away from your computer screen, the blue glare does not count.
- Get your whole head in the shot. Do not skim the top of your head or your chin.
- Try to take high resolution photos and minimize the blurriness. If this means you have to get back on your meds to get rid of your shakes do it!
- Do not send me nudes. Jesus.

Productivity at Peak

So the other day I was walking around in the town forest and I found a spot to stack some rocks. Stacking rocks is one of my top three favorite things to do. I feel like I made quite an impressive tower and I wanted to remember it. I didnt bring my digital camera and my cell phone isnt high tech enough to take pictures, so I sat for a while and sketched it out. Sketching is also one of my top three favorite things to do. The tower is probably a little taller than me, and Im pretty short.
This is my 30th IF.

Romance is dead, long live romance!

In commemoration of Anna Nicole Smith's sudden death, and Illustration Friday's theme Crash, I designed an Anna memorial tattoo. Feel free to get it inked in the most intimate of places.

And some links of interest:
- Liz drew me on her blog!
- My friend Jon has just admitted to being the writer of this fine piece of Canadian blog, Chronicles of the 12th Floor.
- I also added a music player to my blog, you can find it in the right column. It has some songs I like on it.

80s

I drew this old lady while watching Harold and Maude (1971). Practicing my wrinkles. She's looks good for 80.
Everyone knows what happens to Maude on her 80th birthday, right?
And this is my 20th Illustration Friday post.

Bzz Bzz Bzz

Here it is. No, it's not Buzz Aldrin. This is my dear friend Jen McMayonaise, drawing her Illustration Friday Buzz entry at a local independent hipster coffee shop called Starbucks. Very authentic 1950's feel. It was founded in 1949 in Norwood, MA.
I was pretty surprised to see that Penelope picked my word again this week (see: Clear), especially because my B.F.F.L.I.R.L. Liz, just had her work up as Pick of the Week.
I dont even know when or why I entered "Buzz." My only answer is: I must have been pretty buzzed at the time. I usually am when I start submitting words. I promise not to enter anymore bizarre inillustratable topics. But I do get frustrated after a few weeks of stuff like Peace and Phoenix. Barf City, U.S.A.
And I'd like to thank the Starbucks guy for all the free stuff.

Joaquin Phoenix

This week's Illustration Friday topic is Phoenix, so I drew actor Joaquin Phoenix. Walk the Line and Quills are excellent films he's in.

Nightmare Hippy Girl

This is my Illustration Friday entry for the word Peace. At first I thought I'd forget about this topic (because it's lame), but a week of watching Disney movies and playing Barbies with my nieces inspired this drawing. It's one of those hippy girls with big eyes and her head in the clouds.

Insomnia

My iPod on shuffle.

He caught the moon.
I've seen a bridge like this before.

It's like a dance.

I don't remember drawing this.

My love of rocks and bunnies.
I drew these between 3 and 6am this morning. It's 4:10pm, I havent slept yet. Actually, I slept two hours at Jon's this afternoon. I'm trying to stay awake, so that I might sleep tonight.
[Don't forget, the next World Wide Sketchcrawl is December 9th! Visit the site to find your city. I'll be participating in Boston. An excellent adventure.]

Thanksgiving Sucks Anyway

My finished Thanksgiving card, slow cooked and ready just in time for Illustration Friday. I'm not a big fan of this topic, though (or looking through dozens of illustrations of dead turkeys and clichéd Natives on IF).

Clear Eyes Is Awesome

I was born in the 80's. I've watched too much TV.
Anyway, I was very surprised and delighted to see that my topic was chosen for Illustration Friday this week. Too bad the word I submitted was Clear. For the last few weeks IF has had themes related to translucency (Ghost, Wind, and Smoke), so as a sort of joke I entered a bunch of topics that mean clear. Like crystal, translucent, see-through and limpid (yeah, I used a thesaurus).
Couldn't Penelope have picked my word when it was Peas? Oh well! My website hits are way up, and I got to draw my first portrait of Ben Stein! Here's a link to one of the Clear Eyes commercials, via YouTube.com.

Dylan Smoking

I am between sketchbooks right now, but I found a corner near the front to do a quick sketch of Bob Dylan. Done with pencil, Micron 005 pen, and a Prismacolor marker. About 3"x4".

The Baptism

I'm using an old painting for my first Illustration Friday entry,
the word "sacrifice" conjured up so much from my childhood...
I couldnt think of a better image, of how I see the tainted word.
Who is being sacrificed, for who... for the peas?
